Project Overview
The Dr. Martin Luther King Boys and Girls Club in the East Garfield Park community of Chicago was facing some major issues with its facility. The building, constructed in the 1960s, had an out-of-operation swimming pool and no air conditioning. Perhaps the most pressing issue, however, was that the facility needed a new roof.
“We’d had several leaks throughout different program areas within the Club, and we had other issues,” says Tom Krueger, facilities manager of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago. “Last September we decided to close the Club for a year, basically because of the roof. … The main priority was getting the roof.”
Gary Menzel, president of Roofers Local #11 in Chicago, contacted Ridgeworth about looking at the project and offering a bid. Ryan Petrick met Gary and Tom.
“Rod and Ryan were terrific to work with,” says Tom.
After completing an initial inspection, Ryan shared some options for the facility. Based on this conversation, Ridgeworth then put together proposals to reroof the facility with a new TPO roof system. Following additional discussions, the Boys and Girls Club awarded Ridgeworth the contract.
The logistics of this particular project posed some challenges. The building’s location had very limited access for trucks, equipment, and materials, so Ridgeworth worked with the City of Chicago to obtain permits for street parking. Ridgeworth also collaborated with longtime supplier Bone Roofing Supply to ensure the delivery of materials with minimal interruption to the surrounding neighborhood.
Once everything was in place, the project went smoothly. With phase one complete, the Club has moved on to the other two phases: the pool and the mechanicals. They plan to reopen in this September.
The Ridgeworth team is thrilled to have been able to provide the Dr. Martin Luther King Boys and Girls Club with a roof that will keep them dry for years to come.
“What Ridgeworth did for us was they basically gave us a great price to go over the existing roof and put a new roof on and it turned out great,” says Tom. “They were a great company to work with and very professional, so we intend on using them in the future for all of our Clubs. They did a great job.”
